Wilmer-Hutchins Defeats Lincoln in High Scoring Battle

Hutchins - After an impressive win over Kimball one week ago, Lincoln (3-2) couldn’t find its stride against Wilmer Hutchins (2-2) Friday night. The Eagles never trailed in the 54-42 victory.

Big play after big play was the first quarter narrative, as Wilmer Hutchins began an onslaught of scoring with a long play and score, followed by a two point conversion. Lincoln would quickly rebound with a quick score on a long run and tie the score. That was short-lived, as the Eagles next offensive possession resulted in an 80 yard rushing score. After the wild sequence on defense and a special teams player seemingly touching the ball, but not collecting it - Wilmer Hutchins took over in perfect position to score yet again before the first quarter would wrap up.

Quarterback DJ Todd found senior receiver Ja’quavion Gaston in the end zone, putting the Eagles up 24-8. Three touchdowns and three two-point conversions in the first quarter had Wilmer Hutchins feeling rather confident against a Lincoln team that entered the game as heavy favorites.

There was an absence of defense for both teams much of the first half. Lincoln would score on offense with ease, while Wilmer Hutchins would repeatedly capitalize on Lincoln’s mistakes. Even with a halftime score of 38-20 in favor of Wilmer Hutchins, there was still faint hope in the audience that Lincoln could make a comeback.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, Lincoln would cut the lead to 10 points. Wilmer Hutchins would return the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the score. Lincoln could never quite slow the scoring ability of Wilmer Hutchins Friday, losing this district matchup 54-42.

The Tigers will play Roosevelt after a bye week. Wilmer-Hutchins will play Roosevelt next Thursday.
