Duncanville Can’t Complete Comeback Against Familiar State Game Rival
Arlington – Two things can be true at the same time: The Duncanville Football program is a powerhouse. The final play call in Saturday’s Class 6A Division 1 will remain questionable for years to come.
There were three games played at AT&T Stadium on Saturday. The middle game boasted the day’s only controversy and for that matter of seconds – fans in attendance for the Galena Park North Shore vs Duncanville game had but a few “edge of seat” moments.
After a scoreless first half, North Shore scored on a 44-yard touchdown reception by Jaylen Bocard. The next drive would be a long one – 11 plays to be exact, taking over five minutes off the clock. It would result in a 27-yard North Shore field goal.
Duncanville was down 10-0. Now in the fourth quarter – still. all was not lost for the Panthers.
On 3rd down from the North Shore 32, junior Trenton Yancey took on the role of quarter back from the Panthers and threw a strike to Zachrey Turner. Much to the delight of the crowd - Duncanville was on the board and there were still five minutes remaining in the game.
North Shore managed only one first down on the ensuing possession before having to punt. Duncanville would regain possession with 2:47 left with a chance to tie or win. The energy in AT&T Stadium had completely shifted at this point. At the least – Duncanville would at least tie the game and overtime would be next up.
A 3rd and 14 was converted. A 3rd and 10 was converted. A quarterback scramble. An incomplete pass and a short run. Fourth down. A stadium anticipating a field goal; perhaps some anticipating going for the conversion.
Another incomplete pass.
North Shore takes over and wins the Class 6A Division I Title.
Both teams and all spectators appeared to be in disbelief for several moments after the game concluded. The previous five matchups between Duncanville and North Shore averaged over 56 points. The offensive struggles and the final offensive possession for Duncanville will be discussed by sports enthusiasts for some time.
